About This Data

Ember, "Global Electricity Review 2026" (published April 21, 2026; we read it on October 24, 2026). Coal 33.0% (10,476 TWh), gas 21.8% (6,919 TWh), hydro 14.0% (4,437 TWh), nuclear 8.9% (2,812 TWh), solar 8.7% (2,778 TWh) and wind 8.5% (2,715 TWh) are Ember's shares of global generation in 2025. Ember's total for renewables is 33.8% (10,730 TWh).

Note: Ember does not list two of the eight slices. "Bioenergy and other renewables" (2.5%) is what is left of Ember's 33.8% renewables total after hydro, solar and wind, and "Other fossil" (2.6%) is what is left of its 57.4% fossil total after coal and gas. Both are our subtraction, not Ember rows. The shares are rounded, so the slices add up to 100.0% while Ember's own totals can differ from a sum of rounded rows by 0.1.

Key Insights from This Data

Renewables passed coal in 2025

Ember reports renewables at 33.8% (10,730 TWh) against coal at 33.0% (10,476 TWh). In a pie chart that is the one comparison that changed: the two biggest groups are nearly the same size, so the slices have to be added up by type to see it.

Hydro is the biggest single renewable slice

Hydro was 14.0% of the world's electricity. Solar (8.7%) and wind (8.5%) are each smaller, but together they make 17.2%, more than hydro, and Ember reports that wind and solar now make more than half of all renewable generation.

Gas is the fossil slice that grew

Gas reached a record 6,919 TWh and 21.8% of generation, the only fossil fuel that increased in 2025 according to Ember, while coal fell by 63 TWh. Fossil fuels together were 57.4%.

Eight slices is more than most people chart

Of 17,002 charts downloaded from this site between January 29 and October 23, 2026, 78.3% had six slices or fewer and only 4.3% had exactly 8. To match that, make a three-slice version by type: fossil fuels 57.4%, renewables 33.8% and nuclear 8.9%.

Best Practices for This Chart Type
  • Say the year and the unit in the title: "share of electricity generation, 2025" is not the same as the share of all energy, which includes oil for transport and heat.
  • Color by family: grays for fossil fuels, blues and greens for renewables, so the eye sees the groups before it reads the labels.
  • Order the slices by size, or by family if the point is renewables against fossil. Putting hydro, solar and wind next to each other makes the 33.8% renewable total easy to see.
  • Label every slice with its percent. Solar (8.7%) and wind (8.5%) are too close to tell apart by angle.
  • Make a second three-slice pie (fossil, renewables, nuclear) when the audience only needs the headline.
