About This Data

Pew Research Center, "How the Global Religious Landscape Changed From 2010 to 2020" (published June 9, 2025; we read it on October 5, 2026). Each value is that group's share of the world's 2020 population, as Pew reports it. The seven shares add up to 100.0%.

Note: "No religion" is Pew's religiously unaffiliated group. "Other religions" is Pew's combined group of Baha'is, Daoists, Jains, Shintoists, Sikhs, Wiccans, Zoroastrians, folk religions and many small groups. The numbers are Pew's estimates for 2020, not a head count.

Key Insights from This Data

Three groups are each about a quarter

Christians (28.8%), Muslims (25.6%) and people with no religion (24.2%) add up to 78.6% of the world's people. Hindus are next at 14.9%, and every other group together is 6.5%.

"No religion" is the third-largest slice

Pew counts 1.9 billion religiously unaffiliated people in 2020, up 270 million since 2010, and their share rose nearly a full percentage point to 24.2%. China alone has 1.3 billion of them.

Muslims grew fastest, Christians fell behind

The Muslim population grew by 347 million from 2010 to 2020 and its share rose 1.8 points to 25.6%. Christians added 122 million to reach 2.3 billion, but their share fell 1.8 points to 28.8%.

Seven slices is more than most people chart

Of 13,058 charts downloaded from this site between January 29 and August 18, 2026, only 5.1% had exactly 7 slices, and 77.9% had six or fewer. To match that, merge Buddhists, other religions and Jews into one "Other" slice (6.5% together) and you have five slices, the most common count here (19.3%).

Best Practices for This Chart Type
  • Put the data year in the title: religion shares move a point or two a decade, and "2020" tells the reader which estimate they are looking at.
  • Order slices from largest to smallest and keep "Other" last, so the eye reads the big three first.
  • Label small slices with a callout or put the exact numbers in a table next to the chart: Jews at 0.2% is too thin to see as a slice.
  • Use neutral, distinct colors. Avoid colors that carry a message about a group, such as red for one religion and green for another.
  • Say what "no religion" means. Pew counts atheists, agnostics and people who say they have no particular religion, and many of them still hold some beliefs.
